Associated Press Comments Houghton People with a stake in the history of Michigans Upper Peninsula are preparing for a longstanding opportunity to gather and share information. The three-day Upper Peninsula History Conference kicks off Friday in Houghton. Its the 64th annual event. The conference includes tours and talks about the Italian Hall in nearby Calumet. Thats where 73 people died on Christmas Eve a century ago, when a false fire alarm set off a stampede during a party for children of striking workers.
